Arsenal defeated Sporting 1-0 on aggregate, with Kai Havertz’s first-leg goal in Lisbon proving to be the difference in the tie.

The Gunners were not great at the Emirates Stadium in the first leg, but managed to get the job done and will now play Atletico Madrid.

Despite only just getting over the line and a rather favourable run, it is an achievement which should not be understated at Arsenal.

Mikel Arteta creates history at Arsenal by becoming the first coach to help the club reach back-to-back Champions League semi-finals.

Arteta is desperate to win the Champions League and even sees winning the European Cup in North London as his biggest ambition.

After the game, Arteta told the media: “My message was gratitude. We’ve done something that has never been done in the history of the club. We did it while missing players. Credit to the supporters.”

Now, the Gunners are two hurdles away from winning the competition for the first time in their history, with Atletico Madrid and Bayern Munich or PSG standing in their way.

Meanwhile, the North London club will also have their eye on a second-ever Champions League final, but must overcome Diego Simeone’s team to get there.

Last season, it was a high-flying PSG team which knocked them out, but this time, they face a tough tie against Atletico.

Ademola Lookman is excited to face Arsenal and has acknowledged that it will be a very tough semi-final against the Gunners.

Simeone’s team did very well to beat FC Barcelona in their quarter-final tie, and the first leg at the Metropolitano could be massive in the tie.

But regardless of what happens, Arteta has now taken Arsenal to a place they have never been before in back-to-back Champions League semis. As he said ahead of Sporting, it’s an ‘unbelievable opportunity’.
