Arsenal take on Crystal Palace on Sunday afternoon, and Paul Merson has made his prediction ahead of the clash.

The Gunners currently sit top of the Premier League table after eight matches, and have conceded just three goals in the process.

Mikel Arteta’s team cruised past Atletico Madrid in the Champions League on Tuesday, and the Spaniard will hope his team’s positive form continues when they take on the Eagles.

Palace are also in excellent form, although they’ll have two days fewer than the North Londoners to prepare for their trip to the Emirates, as they play AEK Larnaca in the Europa Conference League on Thursday.

Paul Merson makes Crystal Palace vs Arsenal prediction

Arsenal are now the favourites to win the Premier League, and it’s not a surprise based on the level of their performances in recent weeks.

The Gunners have been exceptionally solid defensively, completely negating the opposition in every single game that they’ve played.

Meanwhile, their attack is starting to come together in a cohesive manner, with the likes of Eberechi Eze, Bukayo Saka and Viktor Gyokeres starting to combine effectively.

Paul Merson has been bullish in his admiration for Arsenal this season, and the former Gunners star is adamant that they’ll continue their run against a good Palace side this weekend.

Writing for Sportskeeda, Merson tipped the North Londoners to overcome their southern counterparts 2-0.

“I don’t think Crystal Palace can play like they did against Bournemouth in this game,” he wrote.

“People are talking about Jean-Philippe Mateta missing that chance in the end and how close they were to winning, but that goal would have never stood because there was a clear foul in the build-up. Palace deserve credit for getting back into that game though.

“Arsenal are so efficient and they have quality players. I’d be shocked if they don’t win the league from here. Arsenal steamrolled Atletico Madrid in the Champions League.

“Who does that to Diego Simeone’s team? Atletico were 2-0 down against Liverpool and drew 2-2 before eventually losing 3-2. When they went 2-0 down to Arsenal, it felt like game over already.

“Arsenal are mind-blowing at the back and they have some nice fixtures coming up. In fact, Arsenal don’t play Manchester City or Liverpool until the New Year. The title race could be all over by then!

“Palace did well to go unbeaten in 19 games and now they are without a win in their last two. I don’t think they will get a result at the Emirates this weekend.”

Crystal Palace have the best attacking metrics in the Premier League this season

If any team can finally breach Arsenal’s defence, it could be Crystal Palace.

The Eagles have been exceptional going forward this season, with Jean-Philippe Mateta performing at an elite level, while Ismaila Sarr and Yeremy Pino have also been in fine form.

In fact, Oliver Glasner’s side have actually created more expected goals than anyone else in the Premier League this season.

Manchester City14.4
Arsenal13.6

Way out in front in the expected goals for table, Glasner’s side have been effective at engineering moments to hit teams in transition, and have done so to devastating effect.

The flip side of this is that Palace have conceded the seventh most expected goals this season. Thus, this could be a much more open game than Arsenal have been used to this term.
