Ally McCoist says he’s now come to a ‘strange’ realisation about Arsenal this season

Ally McCoist has revealed where he currently stands on Arsenal’s position in the Premier League title race.

The Gunners sit pretty at the summit of the English top flight, a point clear of chasers Liverpool after seven matches.

Mikel Arteta’s side have won each of their last four matches in all competitions and are unbeaten in seven, while the Merseysiders have suffered defeat in each of their previous three.

This reversal in fortunes has prompted many to reevaluate their takes on the outcome of the race, with many now backing Arsenal to finally win the elusive piece of silverware that has evaded them for over 20 years.

Ally McCoist reveals the ‘strange’ realisation he’s come to about Arsenal and Liverpool

Arsenal have been the best team in the Premier League this season, according to all the various metrics.

The Gunners have conceded just three goals thus far, and look on course for a remarkable campaign from a defensive standpoint, which could be enough for them to go all the way.

Meanwhile, Liverpool have a plethora of issues across the board, and Manchester City are heavily reliant on Erling Haaland sustaining his godly form.

Before the international break, co-commentator Ally McCoist revealed that he’d changed his mind on who he thinks will win the league, and he has now restated this, while describing this shift in opinions as ‘strange’.

“It’s strange. It really is strange because I can’t lie to you, I went for Liverpool,” McCoist said on TNT Sports’ show, the Breakdown.

“I looked at Liverpool’s window, and particularly when Isak went, I thought ‘it’ll take some beating’, but bizarrely after Liverpool beat Arsenal, I thought to myself Arsenal look all right you know?

“Even after the defeat, the wonderful free kick, I think Arsenal look alright and I think Liverpool, although they were getting very good results, I don’t think they’d hit anything like, and I still don’t think they’ve hit anything like, the form that you’d anticipate them to hit, but Arsenal they look the real deal.”

Manchester City look more like winning the Premier League than Liverpool at the moment

Liverpool invested heavily in the summer, but they’re yet to form a cohesive team with all the new talent that they’ve assembled.

While Arne Slot’s side have got points on the board, their current expected goals difference per 90 of 0.43 is only the sixth best in the Premier League.

Meanwhile, Arsenal’s xG difference per match stands at 1.08, with Manchester City the next best in the division at 0.71.

Best xG Differences per 90 in the Premier League 2025/26
Arsenal+1.08
Manchester City+0.71
Crystal Palace+0.57
Manchester United+0.53
Newcastle+0.52
Liverpool+0.43

This specific metric tends to be very predictive, and would suggest that if Liverpool keep playing in the manner that they are, then they won’t be near the top of the league come the end of the season.

Of course, things could click for the Reds, but they haven’t yet. For the time being, the Haaland-led machine look like the side most likely to challenge Arsenal for the title.
