Portuguese media left stunned as Viktor Gyokeres did something they’d ‘never seen’ vs Man United

Viktor Gyokeres was unable to mark his Premier League debut with a goal for Arsenal.

All eyes were on the Swede as he started against Manchester United to make his first Premier League appearance.

It was a testing game for Arsenal, who were atrocious for the most part, seeing Gyokeres left with minimal service to attempt to make the difference. 

The Old Trafford crowd jeered Arsenal’s number 14 as he was hooked on the hour mark, as he left the pitch without recording a shot on goal.

Portuguese media react to Viktor Gyokeres’ Premier League debut

Gyokeres already has so many doubters, which is to be expected when becoming a big-money signing in the Premier League.

The Swede arrived in England from Sporting CP, where he scored 97 goals over two seasons, reinforcing why there is so much pressure on the striker.

It’s not only the English media who are watching Gyokeres like a hawk, but those back in Portugal, too.

Portuguese outlet A Bola reacted to the 27-year-old’s competitive debut, noting that he did something they had ‘never seen’ from him at Sporting. 

“We had never seen this Gyokeres…The former Sporting forward fumbled the ball in a play that we’re used to seeing him go inside…and score.”

When Gyokeres received the ball near the left side, it looked as though he’d take a touch and line up one of his trademark shots, but the ball got caught under his feet.

A Bola pounced on the former Sporting talisman’s misfortune, which was harsh considering that, for the most part, he was a bright presence in a lacklustre Arsenal front line.

Gyokeres’ stats vs Manchester United

Gyokeres’ teammates know what he can do, so there is no cause for concern surrounding the striker. 

It’s crazy that after playing just 60 minutes, there is so much discourse around the forward, but when standards are set high, they’re there to be met.

It wasn’t the most glamorous debut from Gyokeres, but when looking at the context of the game, there was little the striker could actually do.

Mikel Arteta will need to work on his wing play more than anything, as Gyokeres desperately needs support in the final third.
