Eberechi Eze made his Champions League debut when Arsenal faced Athletic Bilbao.
The England international joined the Gunners from Crystal Palace in the summer, and his signing raised the excitement levels at the Emirates.
Eze did well in his first start for Arsenal against Nottingham Forest at the weekend, but he had a more difficult game in Spain against Athletic Club.
In the first half, Eze thought it would be a good idea to move inwards into a more central position, but he got an earful from his manager.
Mikel Arteta screamed at the new Arsenal number 10, instructing him to hold the width on the left as Riccardo Calafiori had already inverted.
Many Arsenal fans spotted that, and their reaction on social media suggests that they are not happy.
Arsenal fans react to Mikel Arteta screaming at Eberechi Eze
Eberechi Eze thrives when he is allowed to play in a free role, and Arsenal fans hoped to see him get that license when he joined the club.
However, after seeing Arteta shout at him for trying to move inwards, Arsenal fans have had their say on social media.
One Arsenal fan tweeted: “Arteta is killing one of the best 10s in the league by forcing him to hug the touchline. It is absurd to want Merino central over Eze and Ethan.”
Another wrote: “When Eze was at Palace, every attack went through him, but Arteta has him doing touchline winger shifts.”
“Arteta was immediately onto Eze, demanding he hold his wide position instead of drifting infield. His coaching is so systematic,” wrote another.
Mikel Arteta was right – here’s why
Every Arsenal fan wants to see Eze play centrally with more freedom, and we’re no different.
The former Palace star has the ability to make a big difference in a free role, which is why most supporters are against him playing on the left wing.
Arteta screaming at Eze seems to have angered many fans, but the Arsenal manager was right.
Calafiori had already occupied a central role after inverting, so there was no need for Eze to move inwards and take up the same position.
After Arteta yelled at Eze and made him hold the width, the Arsenal number 10 received the ball. That’s exactly what was needed.
