Arsenal endured a difficult start to their Premier League clash vs Brentford on New Year’s Day.

Although Arsenal dominated possession and territory from the off at the Gtech Community Stadium, it was Brentford who drew first blood.

After Martin Odegaard gave the ball away cheaply in the middle of the park, the Bees broke forward quickly.

Arsenal transfer target Bryan Mbeumo beat Riccardo Calafiori before wrong-footing David Raya to convert at the near post.

Martin Odegaard and Jurrien Timber didn’t celebrate Gabriel Jesus goal

Mikel Arteta’s side were able to hit back and equalise quickly, as Gabriel Jesus was able to maintain his resurgent recent goalscoring form with a poacher’s finish from close range.

However, as the rest of the team joined the Brazilian striker in jubilation, Odegaard and Jurrien Timber took the opportunity to discuss tactics with Arteta.

This discussion was spotted by journalist Sam Dean, who reported on X: “Martin Odegaard and Jurrien Timber did not join the celebrations of that Arsenal goal.

“Instead they ran straight to Arteta on the touchline, to talk tactics. It looked like Odegaard instigated it. He must have seen something out there that needed fixing.”

Timber himself had already picked up a booking in this match which has landed him a suspension for the Gunners’ next Premier League outing against Brighton, so the Dutch defender may have been taking the opportunity to apologise to his manager.

Arsenal fans call out Odegaard vs Brentford

Whilst the North London club were able to fight back into this game, with Mikel Merino and Gabriel Martinelli striking early in the second half to put the Gunners ahead, Arsenal fans on X weren’t impressed with the performances of every player.

Club captain Odegaard came under fire for his display in this fixture, particularly in the first half.

One fan said: “Odegaard’s been such a ghost.”

Another claimed: “Isn’t it obvious that Arsenal can’t solely rely on Odegaard to be our main creator. Odegaard = Bernardo Silva, David Silva, Cazorla kinda level but surely not the main creator this team requires to split defenses with needle-like passes.”

One added: “Odegaard I’m begging you bro, stand up.”

Another stated: “I’ve never seen a more one dimensional ‘creative playmaker’ than Odegaard, contains himself to one small portion of the pitch, spams short passes to Saka then wonders off. Switch the ball maybe? Play some early through balls? Step foot into the left side of the pitch? Cowardice.”
