Arsenal loanee Raheem Sterling made his final appearance for the club as he started in their away clash at Southampton.

Mikel Arteta named a much-changed team at Saint Mary’s, giving a farewell to some of those stars within the side.

Kieran Tierney is set to leave this summer, with the long-serving defender handed a final start for the Gunners.

So too was Raheem Sterling, who joined Arsenal on loan from Chelsea, but has struggled to make an impact this season.

Sterling won’t be rejoining the Gunners permanently this summer, with the expectation being that he will return to Stamford Bridge.

While he looks towards the future, the chants from the Arsenal away end at Southampton certainly underlined just how difficult the move has been.

Arsenal fans joked about Raheem Sterling in a new chant at Southampton

With Arsenal wrapping up the Premier League season with Champions League qualification, the match at Southampton had little in the way of jeopardy.

As a result, Mikel Arteta could afford to rest some of his key stars to avoid any long-term injuries before Arsenal’s pre-season schedule in the months ahead.

That allowed a rare start for Raheem Sterling, who has had little impact for the Gunners across the course of the season.

His struggles were summed up perfectly by the away fans, who chanted in jest: “If Sterling scores, we’re on the pitch.”

Given the fact that he was brought in to do just that, the fact that supporters are joking about it in a chant shows how much of a flop his transfer has been.

It marks an unfortunate end to a rather underwhelming spell for Sterling, who now faces an uncertain future.

Raheem Sterling’s disappointing Arsenal season in numbers

Heading into the final game of the season, Sterling’s lack of impact at Arsenal really does show in the numbers.

The winger has scored just once, while he has five assists to his name across all competitions this campaign.

It means Arsenal will have to put that deal down as a failure, with the loan bringing an end to that spell.

Andrea Berta will now be tasked with improving on those wide areas, with plenty of other stars linked with a switch.
