Arsenal produced a sensational display to emerge 3-0 winners over reigning European champions Real Madrid.

After an entertaining first half where both sides had their chances, the deadlock was finally broken as Declan Rice produced a stunning free kick to open the scoring.

Arsenal fans compared Rice to David Beckham as the England midfielder stepped up just 13 minutes later and scored his second of the game with an even better free kick into the top left hand corner.

Mikel Merino put even more gloss on the score line as Mikel Arteta’s side head to the Bernabeu with a three goal lead.

What Bukayo Saka told Declan Rice before Arsenal free kick

Speaking to Amazon Prime Video during their post match coverage of Arsenal’s victory over Real Madrid, Rice explained how Bukayo Saka gave him the confidence to score his first free kick in his career.

Rice stated: “It’s been in the locker, but I’ve hit the wall too many times or it’s gone over the ball. Originally I was going to cross it, but I saw the wall and the goalkeeper’s position I thought for the first one ‘just go for it’,

“Bukayo said to feel it and I see the outside of the wall and it went it. Then the second one I had the confidence.”

The goals sent the Emirates Stadium into bedlam and even team mates such as Martin Odegaard put their hands on their heads in disbelief.

Rice creates Champions League history

By scoring two direct free kicks in the same game, Rice has made Champions League history by becoming the first player to do so in a knockout game.

The timing of Rice’s first career free kick strikes could not have been better for Arteta’s side and are now in an incredible position of strength after the first leg.

Arteta will now be back to convincing his players that the job is only half done and another solid performance is required to make the semi final.

An incredible night for the Gunners but complacency will now be guarded against and focus will be on welcome Brentford in the Premier League before the return leg.
