What David Raya did before ridiculous double penalty save for Arsenal in Atalanta Champions League tie

Arsenal goalkeeper David Raya stunned the crowd during his side’s clash against Atalanta in the Champions League on Thursday night.

The Spaniard has been the undisputed number-one choice for Mikel Arteta over the past year, ever since he made the switch from Brentford on a loan – which was made permanent in the summer.

Raya managed to usurp Aaron Ramsdale to become the first-choice shot-stopper, despite plenty of confusion over the decision.

It took some time for him to settle, but ever since he earned the number one shirt, he has been difficult to oust from the team – which was reflected in Ramsdale’s move to Southampton.

`Raya has already shown some impressive bits of skill in an Arsenal shirt, but the best may well have been saved for the Champions League against Atalanta.

David Raya took penalty advice before a double save

Arsenal gave away a penalty in the second half, with Thomas Partey fouling Ederson inside the box, giving the hosts a huge chance.

While VAR was checking the decision, Raya was spotted running away to the Arsenal bench, which confused many people.

The shot-stopper seemed to take on some instructions from goalkeeper coach Inaki Cana just before the spot kick was taken.

That may well have helped inform the decision that followed, as Raya made an incredible double save to deny Mateo Retegui to keep his side level.

In commentary, former player Robbie Savage was almost left speechless, saying on TNT Sports: “One of the best saves I’ve ever seen. Unbelievable.”

David Raya signing proving crucial for Arsenal

If there’s one thing that Arteta has proven he isn’t scared of, it’s the tough decisions that come from being the manager.

While many would’ve been happy to keep Ramsdale as the number one choice, it was a bold call to bring in Raya instead.

The Arsenal boss has been rewarded for that decision so far, with the Spaniard appearing to be an upgrade between the sticks in the season or so he’s been at the club.

Both clashes against Tottenham and Atalanta have proven his worth to the side, while many will hope he can replicate that against Manchester City.
