Arsenal star Leandro Trossard made his return to Brighton in the Premier League but was faced with a hostile atmosphere from his old fans.

The winger made over 100 appearances for the Seagulls in all competitions, following a successful switch from Genk.

Trossard featured at wing-back, on the wing and at centre-forward at times, helping Brighton in their ascent to the top.

However, he left in far from ideal circumstances to join Arsenal and in his return to his old club, the fans gave him an earful of what they made of the situation.

The reason why Brighton fans booed Leandro Trossard

Trossard left Brighton in far-from-ideal circumstances in January 2023, making the switch to Arsenal instead.

The transfer came as a result of a bust-up between the 30-year-old and then-manager Roberto De Zerbi.

His agent, Josy Comhair, revealed all as he told the media: “In the run-up to the match against Middlesbrough for the FA Cup, Leandro had already indicated twice that he had problems with his calf,”

“This was the reason why he stopped training. This was, incidentally, in consultation with the medical staff. The manager told Leandro that he had to train separately.

“Last Monday, the manager [De Zerbi] humiliated Leandro in [the] group and indicated that he no longer wanted to see him. A manager who has not communicated directly with his player for four weeks is really incomprehensible.

“It is also the manager who has indicated several times that a transfer is the most convenient solution,”

De Zerbi snapped back, saying: “He knows very well that if he wants to play with Brighton with me, he has to work hard, he has to run, he has to be in the right way.

“We are not a big team such as Real Madrid or Barcelona; we are Brighton and we need players who work like the others..”

It ended up in sealing a transfer away for Trossard, who was nearing the final six months of his contract with Brighton at the time.

Leandro Trossard has chance to quiet Brighton boos

Trossard gave some good years to Brighton and while it didn’t end how he would’ve wanted, to hear those boos would’ve been frustrating for the forward.

Fortunately, though, he has the perfect way to silence the booing by scoring against his former club to help the side, with Gabriel Martinelli out injured.

Whether he can or not remains to be seen, however, it may add that extra piece of motivation to land a goal.

The forward hasn’t had the same sort of clinical impact seen in previous seasons, but he may be able to rediscover that soon.
