Arsenal got their Premier League campaign off to the perfect start with a 2-0 victory over Wolves at the Emirates Stadium.

Mikel Arteta knew the importance of a fast Arsenal start to the season as they aim to go one step further and beat Manchester City to the Premier League title – and they secured an important three points ahead of a tough run of fixtures.

Kai Havertz scored the first Arsenal goal of the new Premier League season before Bukayo Saka gave the hosts a cushion in the second-half to see out a successful opening day.

Heading into the game, defender William Saliba had the chance to make Arsenal history if he ended up on the winning side, and the victory over Wolves now means that he has set a new club record in the Premier League.

William Saliba breaks Arsenal record in reaching 50 Premier League wins

Saliba has been a crucial figure in the Arsenal back line since he returned from several loan spells two years ago, and he racked up 49 Premier League victories in that time.

The win over Wolves now means that he has recorded 50 Premier League wins in his career, and he has managed this total in just 66 games.

With 50 wins, eight draws and eight defeats, he has an astonishing win rate of 75.4%, and he is the quickest player in Arsenal’s history to reach 50 wins in the competition.

William Saliba overtakes legends in Arsenal record books

The record which now belongs to Saliba was previously held by Nacho Monreal, who took 70 games to reach 50 wins after joining from Malaga in 2013.

Saliba has remarkably eclipsed the entire Invincibles squad in how quickly he reached 50 victories. Kolo Toure is now in third place with 72 games, with Edu Gaspar and Sol Campbell taking 73 games, Gilberto Silva 74, and Jens Lehmann and Lauren 75.

In the current squad, Martin Odegaard and Ben White took 77 games, level with Arteta, whilst goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale took 76.

Whilst Saliba’s record is by virtue of the quality of the team he is in, it does also show his importance.

Arsenal reached new levels when he arrived in the squad, transforming into title contenders after finishing fifth, and their title challenge was derailed two seasons ago when the Frenchman picked up a long-term injury, and they will need him to stay fit in order to compete again.
