Getafe striker Borja Mayoral has now spoken out publicly about his potential move to Arsenal.
Arsenal were recently reported to have lodged a £22 million bid for Borja Mayoral. Getafe were said to have rebuffed that initial offer, as they are holding out for a fee closer to their £39 million asking price for the forward.
However, it now seems that the Gunners’ opening bid may never have in fact materialised in the first place. Certainly, Mayoral has not admitted to it, if an offer was ever tabled by the north London club.
That being said, the Gunners do appear to be on the hunt for a new striker, and have been heavily linked with a number of high-profile and big money potential targets. With both Gabriel Jesus and Eddie Nketiah struggling to score consistently this season, it is easy to see why Mikel Arteta is so keen to bring additional firepower to the Emirates Stadium. Transfer journalist Fabrizio Romano expects the north London club to do all they can to bring in a new goalscorer in the current January transfer window.

Borja Mayoral speaks out about Arsenal bid
Despite a new striker being a priority for Arsenal, it does not seem that Mayoral is at the top of Arteta’s shopping list. Whilst the 26-year-old has been in fine form so far this season, having already netted 14 times across all competitions, any interest from the Gunners in securing his services is far from concrete.
Mayoral has stated that no news of genuine Arsenal interest in prising him away from the La Liga club has reached him. As quoted by Estadio Deportivo, he said, “it is news that has surprised me too. I have not spoken with the club or with my representative. I am very focused on Getafe, on a day-to-day basis.”
It would seem, then, if there is indeed any desire on Arsenal’s part to bring Mayoral to the Premier League, then the process is significantly less advanced than first thought. However, the Gunners could yet come forward with a genuine offer for the player.
In the meantime, sporting director Edu will be considering multiple for candidates for the role. It is important that Arsenal bring in a player who can genuinely raise the level of the squad, rather than just provide another body. Considering Arsenal have title-winning ambitions, a short-term panic signing will not help them.
