According to an exclusive report from Fussball Transfers, Arsenal midfielder Granit Xhaka has agreed personal terms with Bundesliga side Hertha Berlin.
The Swiss midfielder is looking for a new challenge after his altercation with Gunners fans two months ago. Unai Emery stripped Xhaka of his captaincy after the incident which has forced him to push for a move away.
The 27-year-old started four games in a row after Unai Emery brought him back into the squad. The reception from the Arsenal fans was fairly good in all of those games but with what’s happened before, Xhaka wanting to leave is understandable.
Mikel Arteta could convince the Swiss international to change his mind in the coming days. That would be a brilliant for both Arsenal and Xhaka considering that the new Arsenal boss would give a clean slate to all the players.
If Xhaka does leave, Arsenal might have to dip into the transfer market to find a replacement. Matteo Guendouzi can’t do it all alone while Joe Willock isn’t quite ready yet. Dani Ceballos’ future is still unclear while Lucas Torreira should be used in his natural number six role.
Arsenal will, no doubt, try to recoup the £35 million (BBC) that they spent on him back in 2016. Xhaka still has over three years left on his current deal which puts us in a strong position during negotiations. Xhaka will definitely do well anywhere he goes and it is a loss for Arsenal but forcing him to stay when he wants to leave would be foolish.
