Arsenal have a few players in their squad who are capable of becoming the best in the world in their position.

Mikel Arteta had a really poor squad at his disposal when he first took charge of the club back in 2019. Many of his players were average, overpaid and underperforming, which is why the Gunners were where they were back then.

Now, the Arsenal squad is among the best in the Premier League and Europe, and on their day, they are capable of beating any side in world football.

William Saliba is one of the first names on Arsenal’s team sheet every week, and he has now had his say on where he stands among the best defenders in the world.

William Saliba says he’s on his way to becoming the best defender in the world

Arsenal signed Saliba for just £27 million from Saint-Etienne in the summer of 2019.

The Frenchman had to wait three whole years before he could make his competitive Arsenal debut, but he has been sensational since.

Saliba is definitely one of the best centre-backs in the world right now, but to become number one on that list, he feels there’s one thing left to do – win big trophies.

Virgil van Dijk and Antonio Rudiger are among the best defenders on the planet, and they have both won some huge titles over the years.

Saliba is a lot younger than both of the above players, so he still has plenty of time. But, the 23-year-old believes he is on the right track to becoming the best defender in the world.

He told Fox Sports Mexico: “I have been on the right track for both seasons, mainly last season. I’m perhaps on my way to becoming the best defender in the world.

“I think I’m one of the best at the moment, but to say that I have to win some titles. I think that’s what I’m missing right now.

“If you win titles, you’re good and if you don’t, you can’t say you’re the best. That’s what I believe. I’m one of the best in the world.”

Saliba will definitely surpass Virgil van Dijk’s legacy

When Liverpool captain Van Dijk was 23 years old, nobody really knew who he was.

On the other hand, at the same age, Saliba is widely viewed as one of the best centre-backs in the world, and he will get even better in the coming years.

As far as the biggest trophies are concerned, Van Dijk has won one Premier League and one Champions League title throughout his career.

Saliba can comfortably emulate that, and the fact that he plays for a country as strong as France could help him pick up a few international trophies as well.

Van Dijk may have an edge in the debate now, but we are convinced that Saliba will surpass the Dutchman’s legacy in the coming years.
