Mark Schwarzer has claimed that Aaron Ramsdale’s Arsenal career could now be done having been dropped by Mikel Arteta this season for David Raya.

The England international was surprisingly replaced last summer after Arsenal signed David Raya on loan from Brentford, with Ramsdale losing his starting place to the 28-year-old goalkeeper.

Given how good the £30m signing from Sheffield United has been for Arsenal since arriving in 2021, the decision to drop Ramsdale has been one that hasn’t sat well with supporters, despite Raya impressing in north London.

And speaking on the Football’s Greatest podcast, Schwarzer claimed Arteta has ended Ramsdale’s career at Arsenal, with host Jeff Stelling saying that the decision to sign Raya was ‘bonkers’ last summer.

Schwarzer said: “He’s only dug himself a hole because of what he said, which is when he signed David Raya is that there’s no number one and why can’t I change my goalkeeper during a game.

“Call me old fashioned, but I don’t know anywhere on the planet where that works, of course there’s penalty shootouts and injuries, but to actually change it? I don’t see a big difference between Ramsdale and Raya, if anything, I think Ramsdale is a better goalkeeper all-round, I just don’t get it.

“All I hope, is that he’s being honest with Ramsdale, because he hasn’t been honest publically. It seems there’s a lack of honesty, and for me, it looks like Ramsdale is finished at Arsenal.”

The fall of Ramsdale is something few Arsenal fans would have predicted and even fewer wanted to happen even after Raya was signed in the summer.

The England star is a beloved figure in north London and a player many Arsenal supporters predicted would have starred for the club for the next ten years.

Yet with Arteta having his clear preference in Raya, the Arsenal manager now needs to ensure that Ramsdale is sold in the summer, with the 25-year-old good enough to play for most top clubs in Europe.
