Aaron Ramsdale matched incredible 44-year Arsenal record in win over Brentford

Despite a hairy performance against Brentford yesterday, Aaron Ramsdale did match an impressive record for Arsenal.

Ramsdale was restored to Mikel Arteta’s side in the wake of David Raya’s ineligibility against his parent club.

And the England international did receive the kind of warm reception he might have expected from the home fans.

Jeered from the off, Ramsdale was understandably struggling to cope with the occasion.

However, given he did keep a rather fortuitous clean sheet, Ramsdale matched a 44-year record for Arsenal.

Data expert Harvey Downes shared the record on X, one that has stood since the 1979-80 season.

As of full time yesterday, Ramsdale became the second Arsenal goalkeeper to keep two away clean sheets against a specific opponent (Brentford) in a single season.

Pat Jennings was the last, doing so twice against Brighton Hove Albion in the late seventies.

So whilst Ramsdale did need two goal-line clearances, one to save his blushes, he’s still making history.

Of course, the other clean sheet mentioned was in the Carabao Cup earlier this season.

It must have been difficult for many fans to watch Ramsdale playing with so little confidence yesterday.

Since signing for the club for £30m years ago, the keeper has visibly grown in stature as he’s had more trust from Arteta.

However, yesterday’s performance was one full of uncertainty – a product of the situation he’s in.

It would be very difficult for any player to show authority and confidence in those circumstances, but it’s credit to Ramsdale that he did recover well.

And whether his future is ultimately at the Emirates or elsewhere, the keeper will always have a place in the hearts of Arsenal fans.

Moreover, given the clean sheet record he matched yesterday, Ramsdale will always have a place in the history books too.

And following the late 1-0 win against Brentford, he’s just landed another owing to his superb creativity.
