Alan Shearer says he’s noticed something worrying about Liverpool after watching them ahead of Arsenal clash

Next up for Arsenal comes the dreaded trip to Anfield, but the Gunners may not fear Liverpool as they did last season.

Arne Slot’s side deserved to be champions in 2024/25, winning the league by ten points to keep Mikel Arteta’s dream on hold.

Going into the season, Liverpool are the pundits’ pick to win the league again, but there are some concerning early signs for Slot to alter.

Arsenal are aware of Liverpool’s weaknesses at the back, as the reigning champions have already leaked four goals, a tally that only Leeds United, Wolves and West Ham are worse.

Alan Shearer shares what he really thinks about Liverpool

Ibrahima Konate looks incredibly vulnerable at centre-back, but that’s not the only concern there is about Liverpool.

On The Rest Is Football podcast, Alan Shearer assessed the Reds’ win over Newcastle United at St James’ Park, sharing what he’s noticed since watching Liverpool live.

“You know what it’s like when you’re watching a game on television rather than watching one live,” he explained.

“So to see them live, without a doubt, their rhythm is nowhere near what it was when they were playing well last season.”

Shearer’s verdict will be assuring for Arsenal ahead of their trip to Anfield, as it’s abundantly clear that Slot’s side aren’t as up to speed as perhaps hoped.

Aside from defensive issues, the balance is off, leaving £116m signing Florian Wirtz largely in the dark, something that the Gunners must take note of.

Being only three games in, it could be said that there’s no better time for Arsenal to face Liverpool, particularly after seeing how easily rocked the champions were against the ten men of Newcastle.

Arsenal’s Premier League win rate at Anfield

In terms of what has been seen so far from Liverpool in 2025/26, Arsenal will feel confident, but one thing will knock the Gunners’ belief before a ball is even kicked.

The North Londoners have an abysmal record at Anfield in recent years, with the last win at the ground in the league coming in September 2012, a game that Arteta actually started in midfield.

Arsenal’s Premier League record at Anfield

Though Arsenal are unbeaten against Liverpool at Anfield in the league since 2021, the Gunners’ win ratio at the ground needs some attention.

Arsenal have won only 18.2% of the Premier League games they’ve played at Anfield, winning six times from 33 matches.

There’s work for Arteta to do, but based on current performances alone, Arsenal will be quietly confident.
