Former Arsenal ace Mikel Arteta sold has played just 52 minutes of football, his move has been a disaster

Arsenal sold several popular young talents in the summer, but whilst some are thriving, not every move has been a success.

Emile Smith Rowe is thriving at Fulham after the Hale End product departed permanently in the summer, and loanee Reiss Nelson is also performing well in West London.

They were not the only Arsenal academy graduates to leave, with Eddie Nketiah yet to score in the Premier League for Crystal Palace after being sold by Mikel Arteta, but there is a player struggling even more than the striker.

Charlie Patino was once billed as Arsenal’s biggest talent, but he made a shock move in the summer, which has not gone as planned.

Former Arsenal starlet Charlie Patino struggling at Deportivo La Coruna

Patino caused a stir when he made a permanent exit from Arsenal in the summer, to join Spanish Second Division side Deportivo La Coruna.

He is in a squad captained by former Arsenal flop Lucas Perez, with Patino’s family ties to the club motivating his move.

Many thought that such a big talent moving to the Spanish second tier would allow him to thrive, but it has been far from plain sailing.

Patino has played just 52 minutes for Depor, with his only start coming in an away defeat at Levante, in which he was underwhelming before being substituted at half time.

This followed a seven-minute substitute appearance for Patino earlier in the season, with the Englishman left on the bench in all of his side’s other games despite being fit to play.

This is far from ideal for Patino, and it remains unclear what the future holds for him now.

Charlie Patino’s fall from grace at Arsenal

Patino made his senior debut for Arsenal in 2021, scoring within minutes in an EFL Cup victory against Sunderland, and many thought the sky was the limit for the midfielder.

However, he would make just one more start, away at Nottingham Forest in the FA Cup, and Patino was completely out of his depth against senior opposition.

The following seasons saw him join Championship sides Blackpool and Swansea City on loan, and whilst he had bright moments at both, he did not do enough to earn a place in a very competitive Arsenal midfield.

It was still a surprise when Patino left for Deportivo La Coruna, but given his struggles for game time there, perhaps he needs to drop to an even lower level to try and fulfil his potential.
