At long last, Mikel Merino is an Arsenal player.
Arsenal have formally announced the signing of Mikel Merino via the club’s official X page.
The Spanish midfielder has joined the North London club from Real Sociedad.
Mikel Arteta has been made to wait for this deal to get over the line, as the transfer saga has dragged on over recent weeks. The move is now signed, sealed, and delivered though, and the manager will be excited to add the Euro 2024 winner to his ranks.
Merino will encounter some familiar faces at the Emirates Stadium, too. He was a teammate of David Raya’s at the international tournament earlier this summer, and played alongside Martin Odegaard whilst the Arsenal captain enjoyed a loan stint with Real Sociedad earlier in his career.
Raya and Odegaard will help Merino to settle at Arsenal, as will the fact that the 28-year-old already has previous Premier League experience, having enjoyed a loan spell with Newcastle United in the past.

What Arsenal fans can expect from Mikel Merino
Merino will bolster the Gunners’ options in the middle of the park, and is a much-needed addition in this regard.
Jorginho has shown signs of decline in pre-season, and in any case the Italian veteran can no longer start games week in, week out, at this stage in his career.
On top of that, Arteta can’t rely upon Thomas Partey to be fit and available when required, given the Ghanaian’s persistent injury issues.
As such, Declan Rice was in need of more midfield support, which will now be provided by Merino. Like the former West Ham United man, the newcomer can operate as both a No. 6, shielding the back four in a deep-lying role, and as a more advanced No. 8.
This means that he and Rice can provide cover for one another from off the bench, and rotate and interchange their roles whilst they are sharing the pitch.
Arteta will also love the fact that Merino is an expert duel winner, especially in the air. The Emirates Stadium faithful can expect him to add steel to the spine of the team, and provide an extra goal threat in set-piece situations.
