Arsenal have the opportunity to match a club record that has stood since 1903 when they take on Slavia Prague in the Champions League on Tuesday night.

Mikel Arteta’s team cruised past Burnley on Saturday afternoon at Turf Moor to move seven points clear at the top of the Premier League table.

Goals from Viktor Gyokeres and Declan Rice gave the Gunners a commanding lead in the first half, before they strolled to a tenth consecutive victory in all competitions with a professional second-half display.

This result sets Arsenal up to match this aforementioned historic record on Tuesday, and means they have now won 13 of their 15 games this term.

Arsenal can break club record of successive wins without conceding

Arsenal are in a ridiculous vein of form.

Saturday afternoon’s comfortable victory over Burnley was their 12th win in their last 13 matches in all competitions, and arguably one of their most accomplished performances of the campaign.

Fluid and creative in forward areas in the first half, the Gunners then saw the game out expertly in the second period, restricting Burnley to very few good opportunities.

Arteta’s side have now won seven games in a row without conceding, matching George Graham’s team in 1987, who went the same number of matches without allowing the opposition to score whilst winning.

If Arsenal beat Slavia Prague on Tuesday and keep another clean sheet, they’ll match the club record of successive wins without conceding – set in 1903, 122 years ago.

This would be quite a feat from Arteta’s outfit, who have built an absurdly effective defensive foundation to go on and consistently win games.

What Mikel Arteta said about Arsenal’s performance against Burnley

Arteta was unsurprisingly thrilled by the manner of his team’s performance at Turf Moor.

The Gunners were ruthless as an attacking team, whilst maintaining their defensive solidity throughout the 90 minutes.

Speaking in his post-match press conference, Arteta praised his team’s showing, describing the performance as ‘exceptional’.

“Well, obviously very happy, a really tough place to come,” he said.

“They’ve lost once in 18 months [at Turf Moor] against Liverpool in the last kick of the game by a penalty, so that tells you the difficulty of that. I think we started the game exceptionally well.

“I think the first half was one of the best that we’ve played. Scored two goals, generated another two or three big chances and conceded nothing. That was a platform because in the second half we dropped the standard, especially with the ball and with our intentions to take more risks, to play more forward.

“But again, defensively, we were exceptional, to the point that the free-kick [at the end] that we were a bit lucky hit the bar and kept the clean sheet.”
