Many Arsenal fans were not impressed by what they saw from David Raya against Porto on Wednesday evening.
David Raya produced a generally solid performance between the sticks in Arsenal’s most recent Champions League outing, up until his poor concession of a last-gasp goal.
The Spanish goalkeeper has not been a universally popular figure at the Emirates Stadium this season. Earlier on in the campaign, plenty of Arsenal supporters were calling for Raya to be dropped and for Aaron Ramsdale to be reinstated into the regular starting XI.
However, Mikel Arteta stuck by the summer arrival, and had looked to have been rewarded for his faith in the player, as Raya seemed to have settled in to life at the north London club. In recent weeks, he has impressed with his quick, clever distribution, and has shown that he excels at coming out to claim crosses that are delivered into the Arsenal box.
Both of those qualities were on display in Portugal. The 28-year-old was a commanding figure in his own penalty area, and was able to remain composed whenever he had the ball at his feet. However all of that good work was undone when he was ultimately beaten in the dying moments of the match, as Galeno’s long-range finish curled into the corner to secure an historic 1-0 win for the hosts.
Raya’s positioning was poor, as he was too far off his line when the shot came in. Therefore, the ball remained out of his reach as it arced around him and nestled into the bottom corner.

Arsenal fans slam David Raya for Porto error
Plenty of Arsenal fans were extremely frustrated with Raya for this late error of judgement. Taking to X to share their thoughts on his performance, one supporter said, “Raya cost us this game man!!!! Why come up a couple of feet when we are defending? Why not take a step before diving ?!! How couldn’t he read the striker will take a curler from that position ? He’s been facing these his whole professional life.”
Another fan claimed, “Raya is not that keeper we want or think of him. He has never been the man of the match. We just have a great defense but each time it’s his call to save the team when the defense is off. Nothing , you wonder why he was that far from the line?”
One supporter simply stated, “Raya should be 100% be doing better on that goal.” Another chipped in with, “The more I see this goal, the more I blame Raya.”
With Ramsdale now all but certain to leave Arsenal in the upcoming summer transfer window, it is vital that Raya shows that he is capable of being the Gunners’ No. 1 on a long-term basis and can cut these errors out of his game.
