Arsenal fans have had a lot to say since the club officially announced the signing of Riccardo Calafiori today. 

Riccardo Calafiori is now an Arsenal player.

After a drawn-out transfer saga, the Italian defender has now joined up with Mikel Arteta and his touring squad in the US.

Calafiori gave a short speech to his new Arsenal teammates, and has been handed the No. 33 shirt in accordance with his wishes. The 22-year-old could now be in line to feature for the Gunners on Thursday, when they will take on Liverpool in a friendly match in Philadelphia. 

Arteta pushed hard to get the Calafiori signing over the line, and will be delighted to finally have the versatile defender at his disposal. It will now be fascinating to see how the player fits into the Spanish coach’s plans.

At first, it seems likely that the 5-cap Italy international will be given a more rotational role, allowing him to get used to his new environment, teammates, and the demands of English football.

Ultimately, though, this is a player with the capacity to become a star at the Emirates Stadium. Fans of the North London club are certainly excited to see just how good Calafiori can become.

Where will Calafiori play for Arsenal?

Calafiori is comfortable playing at both left-back and centre-back, but faces plenty of competition for game time in both roles. Jurrien Timber, Oleksandr Zinchenko, Takehiro Tomiyasu, and Jakub Kiwior will all be battling it out with the new signing for game time at left-back.

Meanwhile, Gabriel Magalahes and William Saliba are an established partnership in the heart of the defence. It has been suggested that Calafiori has been brought to Arsenal to compete with Gabriel directly for his starting berth.
