Arsenal are closing in on a new sporting director as the Gunners look to transform their footballing department in the weeks ahead.

The Gunners have been without a permanent person in that position since Edu Gaspar resigned late last year.

Jason Ayto has been the interim sporting director, overseeing a January transfer window that left many frustrated by a lack of activity.

Instead, Arsenal have refocused to the summer and their plans to improve the side available to Mikel Arteta then.

The next sporting director is set to have a big remit on their hands when it comes to adding the right striker and many others to get a Premier League title push over the line.

With that in mind, Arsenal are closing in on appointing Andrea Berta as the sporting director, which could have a huge say on the future of the club going forward.

Arsenal fans react to Andrea Berta sporting director choice

Arsenal fans have been eager to see who could replace Edu as their sporting director to take the team into the next phase of the project.

Berta appears to be the option, which has got plenty of supporters talking on social media when it comes to the future.

One fan said: “Atleti’s striker heritage alone makes this exciting as hell,” while another added: “Let’s wrap it up asap, so he can start work. We need to start laying groundwork for summer transfers.”

“After doing a bit of research I like what I see,” another fan said. “Atletico are similar in stature relative to the other clubs in La Liga and has been successful during his tenure as technical/sporting director. Having a mixture of young & experienced signings shows he is a big positive IMO.”

“He brought some good signings in at Atletico and made them compete/win trophies during prime [Real] Madrid/Barca years. Let’s have faith.”

Others directly looked at how it would impact recruitment in the weeks ahead, adding: “Can you get me 3 top attacking talents?”

“Arteta getting dark Arts master recruiter,” another added.

In all, fans were pretty positive about the idea of Berta coming in and shaking up the team in the future, starting with the summer.

Andrea Berta must make Arsenal striker signing this summer

If there’s one thing that the incoming sporting director must do immediately, it’s sign a striker for Arsenal.

The Gunners have struggled when it comes to centre-forward options, lacking the current depth and clinical nature to get them over the line.

Arsenal fans have moved from hopeful to expectant when it comes to signing a striker, knowing it may be the missing piece of the puzzle when it comes to the Premier League title.

Berta has shown he can make an impact by signing a striker in the past, now he has to do it against at the Emirates Stadium this summer.
