Arsenal fans have a lot to say about Thomas Partey after Lyon win, they’ve made a total U-turn

Mikel Arteta was able to afford a fit Thomas Partey a start against Lyon in the Emirates Cup yesterday.

Arsenal brought the curtain down on their pre-season campaign in style, as they eased to a 2-0 win over the French side.

It was a dominant performance from Mikel Arteta’s side. Several Arsenal stars impressed, whilst many key players were able to get some vital minutes as the process of getting match fit ahead of the new Premier League season continued.

Riccardo Calafiori was also handed his non-competitive debut, and received a rapturous welcome from the Emirates Stadium faithful.

Meanwhile, in the middle of the park, Thomas Partey quietly went about his business. The Ghanaian ace controlled this part of the pitch, and looked confident and assured on the ball, as he persistently sought to play it forward, seeking Bukayo Saka and Martin Odegaard in space.

Last season, and not for the first time, the 31-year-old’s campaign was decimated by injury. When he did return to the side after a lengthy layoff, Partey looked unable to compete at the top level. However, he showed yesterday, coming off the back of a solid pre-season, that there is still life in him yet.

Thomas Partey is changing the minds of Arsenal fans

Arsenal fans criticised Partey last season. However, many on X are starting to believe that he still has something to offer Arteta.

One said: “If this is how a finished player plays, can I ask for another finished Thomas Partey?”

Another added: “Partey playing well influences the dynamics of our attack. See how he always feeds Saka the ball so easily.”

One quipped: “Legs or no legs, what a player!”

Another fan claimed: “Any chances of Arsenal winning the league, just wrap Partey in a cotton wool !!! that’s it, that’s just that.”

Arsenal still need midfield transfer boost

Whilst Partey may have convinced Arsenal fans that he can still shine for the Gunners, Arteta cannot rely on him to stay fit. Nor can the Spanish coach expect Jorginho to start games week in, week out at this stage in his career.

Due to this, Declan Rice needs more support in the middle of the park. Arsenal must seal a deal for Mikel Merino quickly to bring in the extra midfield body they need.
