Arsenal fans now rage over ‘trademark’ thing Edu is about to do in January window

Cedric Soares may be on the verge of leaving Arsenal.

Besiktas are thought to be closing in on a deal for Arsenal right-back Cedric Soares.

The Portuguese defender is an outcast at the Emirates Stadium, and clearly has no place in Mikel Arteta’s plans. In fact, he is one of two players that the north London club are actively seeking to offload in the current January transfer window.

However, given Cedric is now 32-years-old, has barely played for the last two seasons, and is set to become a free agent when his current contract expires at the end of this season, the Gunners now find themselves in a very poor bargaining position.

Arsenal therefore can’t hope to rake in much of a fee as a result of Cedric’s departure. The best that sporting director Edu can really hope for is getting the former Southampton man’s wages off the books a few months earlier than planned.

Arsenal fans weigh in on potential Cedric Soares departure

The decision to sign Cedric in the first place must now be considered a misstep, as the player was never able to make much of a positive impression in north London, and his exit looks unlikely to improve the Gunners’ record as a selling club.

All too often in the past, Arsenal have failed to attract top prices for their outgoing players, and have even previously allowed players to leave early on free transfers before the expiry of their contracts, simply to get them off the books. A similar scenario could again occur in order to facilitate the departure of Cedric this month.

Plenty of Arsenal fans were eager to share their views on the potential sale of Cedric. Taking to X, one fan urged the club to simply “Just get it done.” Another supporter said, “Good riddance.”

Concerned that the club will once again fail to make any substantial money in exchange for an outgoing player, though, one fan predicted, “Probably sell for free. Edu trademark.” Another supporter quipped, “Soares is pretty shoddy, but he is a defender by trade and given our lack of numbers I wonder if this means we’re signing someone. Narrator: actually it meant Arteta planned to play Partey at RB before he inevitably got injured again.”

One fan who is keen to see Arsenal target Sacha Boey brought to the club optimistically chipped in with “Surely this means we’re buying someone, Sacha Boey for example.”
