Arsenal’s title hopes took something of a dent on Saturday afternoon.
Indeed, an away game at Villa Park against Aston Villa was never going to be easy, and so it proved as Mikel Arteta’s Arsenal were beaten by Unai Emery’s in-form side.
It was a frustrating afternoon for Arsenal, and, as you can imagine, supporters had plenty to say as they watched their team drop points.
Sadly, just a few weeks on from making himself a hero against Tottenham, Eberechi Eze was under fire from supporters in this game.
Was Eberechi Eze at fault for Aston Villa’s opening goal or was it David Raya’s mistake?
Villa take the lead😓
Eze started on the left wing against Villa, and many fans were calling for the England star to never be used in this way again.
Arsenal fans wanted Eze used on the left earlier this season, but now, it would appear supporters want this experiment to end.

Arsenal fans call for Eberechi Eze to never play left wing again
There was a running theme from Arsenal supporters on social media as many called for Eze to not be used in this position again.
“Eze on the left is not it,” One fan wrote.
Meanwhile another supporter made a good point, stating: “Eze isn’t involved much because he’s playing off the left when he should be operating centrally”
Of course, Eze is a fantastic player, and Arsenal need to find a way to get him into the team, but forcing him down the left side doesn’t appear to be working.
The issue wasn’t helped by the fact Riccardo Calafiori was playing in a very strange role, offering very little width and deserting his defensive responsibilities at times, leading to Eze being exposed at the back too.
“Eze left wing with Calafiori free roaming centrally isn’t working.” One supporter added.
“Wasting Eze on the left just to accommodate Odegaard in the middle of the park is hurting the team.” Another claimed.
Eze was subbed at half time in what was a dismal showing on the day, and to make matters worse, Leandro Trossard scored very quickly after coming on.
Is Leandro Trossard the best super sub Arsenal have ever had? If not, who is?
Leandro Trossard scores again off the bench!
Eberechi Eze’s stats on the left wing
Eze has played out on the left on numerous occasions during his career, and, interestingly, the numbers tell a story here.
Eze’s stats out on the left are actually quite good, he has 18 goal contributions in 56 appearances, which is a very strong return.
| Eberechi Eze as a left winger | |
| Games | 56 |
| Goal contributions | 18 |
| Goal contributions per game | 0.32 |
The former Crystal Palace man averages 0.32 goal contributions per game off the left, but he does have a better output when he plays centrally.
| Eberechi Eze as an attacking midfielder | |
| Games | 151 |
| Goal contributions | 62 |
| Goal contributions per game | 0.41 |
Unfortunately for Eze, Martin Odegaard is the Arsenal captain, and it’s going to be tough to drop Odegaard at any point, so that central attacking midfield berth may not open up in the way the midfielder may hope.
Mikel Arteta certainly needs to figure out how to get the best out of Eze while also having Martin Odegaard on the pitch at the same time.
