Mikel Merino to Arsenal transfer twist

Arsenal have been heavily linked with a move for Mikel Merino in the summer transfer window as part of an ongoing midfield rebuild.

The Real Sociedad star has impressed in recent months, featuring for Spain as part of their Euro 2024 triumph.

The 28-year-old, who once played for Newcastle United, only has one year remaining on his contract at his current club.

With that in mind, Sociedad club president Jokin Aperribay has told Mundo Deportivo that a new deal has been offered to the Spaniard.

“We are not in any conversation with any club to get any player to leave,” he claimed. “We knew that the summer was going to be long and that is how it is going to be, we are going to manage [it] during August. We will try to make the team come out stronger.

“I think that Merino has been honest with Real Sociedad during the last year, if he has not renewed it is because he did not want to tell the fans: ‘I’m staying’ – and then leave.

“I would like him not to leave. If he tells us that he likes any of the offers he has on the table, we will see. We are not negotiating with any club now.”

It remains to be seen whether any deal being offered by Arsenal could tempt a new twist in the tale, with a commitment to Merino’s future yet to be decided.

Riccardo Calafiori on Arsenal transfer

New Arsenal star Riccardo Calafiori has discussed how his international teammate Jorginho convinced him to make the switch to the Emirates Stadium.

The Gunners signed the 22-year-old from Bologna in a deal worth up to £42million, bolstering the squad for the season ahead.

Calafiori is capable of playing as a left-back and centre-back, more than comfortable in bringing the ball out into midfield and dictating play.

When discussing the transfer, the new signing told the official Arsenal website: “I just met [Jorginho] one month ago, but I can see that he’s a really good guy.

“I was already convinced but he forced me. He said: ‘Come, come, come! You will enjoy being here, the team is amazing and the staff, everything is good.’

“You can see that already from the first few minutes here.”

Leroy Sane posts transfer hint

One player who has been linked with a move to Arsenal this summer is Bayern Munich and Germany star Leroy Sane.

The winger has previously worked with Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta during his spell at Manchester City, which could help in convincing him into a move.

While plenty of talk has surrounded the 28-year-old, his latest social media post has hinted at his current mindset over a deal.

Taking to the social media platform X (previously known as Twitter), Sane posted a picture of him back at Bayern’s training camp.

The caption simply says: “Back to work!” which potentially hints at his laser focus on the season ahead in Bavaria.

It remains to be seen whether the Gunners will make an offer that could push through a move for Sane.
