Arsenal have just done something for the first time in over 100 years with spirited Liverpool comeback

Arsenal showed their grit, determination and a bit of pride when they fought back against Liverpool at Anfield in the Premier League.

The Gunners endured quite a tough week, with their exit in the Champions League to PSG ending any hope of a trophy this campaign.

With Liverpool already crowned as champions, Arsenal knew it would be a tough pill to swallow when travelling to Anfield.

That was made even tougher when a quickfire double from Cody Gakpo and Luis Diaz put the Reds into a two-goal lead.

Fortunately, a comeback was on the cards after half-time, with Gabriel Martinelli and Mikel Merino finding the back of the net.

It meant a valuable point for Arsenal as they limp towards Champions League qualification for next season.

Arsenal complete two-goal comeback away at Liverpool for the first time since 1908

Arsenal’s draw with Liverpool brought about plenty of lessons that those associated with the Gunners have long known about.

An inability to be clinical in front of goal in the first half, followed by some momentary lapses in judgement in the other box, was typical of some poorer performances to come from this campaign.

The comeback itself has sparked some sense of pride, though, with the team not taking a poor result and performance away with them from their Premier League rivals.

By fighting back from two goals behind, it’s the first time Arsenal have done so at Liverpool to avoid defeat since 1908, per OPTA’s Tom Ede.

It shows just how difficult it can be to travel to Anfield and fight back from such a position in the game.

There’s no doubt that Liverpool’s own league campaign being effectively over had an impact on things, but it’s a moment that Arsenal should be proud of taking it into the final two games of the season.

Mikel Arteta is still annoyed by Arsenal’s start against Liverpool despite the comeback

While Arsenal showed some signs of life in their second-half performance against Liverpool, Mikel Arteta was far from pleased with how they started the first half.

The Arsenal boss demanded more from his players as he told the press: “We were very far off it. I was really upset. Yeah, we had a reaction, but I hate reaction, I like action.

“If we want to be there winning trophies, there is going to be a moment where you win it or you don’t. If you don’t, you have to play another one when you have been working for nine months. That is here, today.

“If you cannot win it, you have to be the best of the rest. I was really, really upset.”

It underlines his frustration, just days after the defeat to PSG, that the team started in the way that they did.

While it did eventually change, they will need to start better in their remaining two games to end the season on a high.
