Iconic former Arsenal striker Ian Wright has backed William Saliba to make it to the very top of the game.
One of the most important bits of business Arsenal got done this summer was tying William Saliba down to a new long-term contract, ensuring his future will be at the Emirates Stadium.
Arsenal paid £27 million to sign Saliba from Saint-Etienne in the summer of 2019. The French centre-back then re-joined Saint-Etienne on loan, before developing his game across temporary stints with Nice and Marseille.
The 22-year-old finally made his competitive debut for the Gunners on the opening day of last season. Since then, he has established himself as a key figure in Mikel Arteta’s starting XI and as one of the most exciting young defensive talents in world football.
The 10-cap France international produced another masterful display against Manchester City on Sunday. Saliba played a key role at the back, taming the threat of Erling Haaland, as Arsenal earned a 1-0 victory.
The young defender was absolutely imperious against the reigning Premier League champions, proving once again that he can shine when up against the best attackers in the game.

William Saliba on the rise
Reflecting on the defender’s performance, Ian Wright said on his Wrighty’s House podcast, “I think Haaland will see William Saliba as the defender that, ‘I need to be on my game today’.”
“You have to look at him and think to yourself, he could play for Real Madrid right now, no danger. He could play for any of them, could play for anyone he wants.”
“In the Premier League, I don’t care what anyone says it is the best league in the world and he’s here, he’s here for another four years, he’s only going to enhance himself and get better.”
Arteta will be keen to keep Saliba at the north London club for as long as he possibly can. The player is a rare, generational talent with the potential to become the best centre-back in the world. He is already arguably the best in the Premier League, and is only going to keep improving.
The only concern Arsenal will have about the player is whether or not they can keep him fit throughout the campaign. Last season, Saliba picked up an injury which sparked the demise of the Gunners’ title push. It is vital that he is able to stay fit and available throughout the season this time around.
