Arsenal were given a glimmer of hope in the Premier League title race on Wednesday evening, as Liverpool were held by Everton at Goodison Park.

Arne Slot’s side thought they’d won it, but James Tarkowski had other ideas, thundering a sublime volley past Alisson Becker in the 98th minute.

With tensions boiling over after the full-time whistle, Michael Oliver sent Slot and Curtis Jones off, potentially damaging Liverpool’s momentum in the title race.

While the Reds remain seven points ahead of Arsenal, the Gunners’ chances of lifting the silverware at the end of the season have increased slightly, although they’d still have to pull off a remarkable comeback to win the trophy.

Arsenal’s Premier League title chances revealed

Kai Havertz is out for the season after sustaining a hamstring injury in Dubai this week, adding to Arsenal’s extensive injury list.

Mikel Arteta will be without the German, Bukayo Saka, Gabriel Martinelli and Gabriel Jesus for the foreseeable future.

In spite of this adversity, the Gunners just about remain in the title race.

According to Opta (via the BBC), Arsenal have an 11.6% chance of winning the Premier League after Wednesday night’s Merseyside Derby drama.

Liverpool are huge favourites with an 88.3% chance, while Nottingham Forest’s odds are at 0.1%.

The North Londoners would have to match an impressive feat to win the title, one only achieved by themselves and Manchester United in Premier League history.

The only two teams to overhaul a points deficit of seven or more after the league leaders have played 24 games are Arsenal in 1998 and United in 1996.

Both of these sides overcame a nine-point gap at this stage of the season or later to lift the Premier League title.

Thus, Arsenal can certainly do the unthinkable, although they have an absolute mountain to climb.

Arsenal have easier fixtures than Liverpool

What makes Arsenal’s title chances more likely is their slightly more appetising schedule.

Arsenal’s remaining fixtures are easier than Liverpool’s, with Slot’s men facing several more difficult away games.

The Merseysiders still have to travel to Stamford Bridge, the Etihad, Villa Park, the Amex and Craven Cottage.

Meanwhile, they also host Newcastle, Everton and Tottenham.

Arsenal, on the other hand, have played the majority of their tough away fixtures, with home games against Chelsea, Bournemouth and Newcastle their more daunting matches.

The two sides of course meet in what could be a title showdown in May, when Arsenal travel to Anfield.
