Arsenal are keen to sign Fiorentina defender Michael Kayode.

According to Italian publication Sport Mediaset, Arsenal are interested in securing the services of Michael Kayode, and have sent scouts to watch the 19-year-old in action for the Serie A outfit.

However, Fiorentina are thought to want to tie the talented teenager down to a new contract.

Kayode has broken into the Fiorentina first team this season, and has established himself as a regular starter in recent weeks. The young right-back is a huge talent with vast potential. The 12-cap Italy under-19 international could well be a future star.

Reporter Corrardo Formigli certainly feels that Kayode has a bright future. As quoted by Firenze Viola, he said, “I was amazed by Kayode’s strength: he is an impressive boy…A player of this caliber hasn’t been seen in Florence for some time, he should be locked down immediately. He’s a player who eats up the pitch and I’m seeing him do amazing things.”

Fiorentina may well hope to keep Kayode on their books, but Arsenal could prove equally keen to win the race for his signature.

Kayode can solve Arsenal squad problem

Mikel Arteta hasn’t been afraid to invest in youthful defenders before, and a move for Kayode in the upcoming January transfer window would make a good deal of sense given Jurrien Timber’s long-term injury has left the squad a little light on rotational right-back options.

Aside from the fact that Timber is injured, the fact that the Dutchman looked so good as a left-back in the early weeks of his Arsenal career suggests a new right-back may well have been needed even if the 22-year-old were fit.

The need for cover in this area becomes even more pressing when considering the fact that Takehiro Tomiyasu is also required to provide cover for the left-back and centre-back positions.

Ben White has excelled since being deployed as a right-back, but competition for places is required and Arteta needs another rotational option for the role. Kayode could plug that gap in the Gunners’ squad.
