Arsenal staff came to one conclusion about Benjamin Sesko as Man United transfer links grow

For a long time in the summer transfer window, it looked as though Arsenal would sign Benjamin Sesko.

Arsenal ultimately opted to sign Gyokeres over Sesko due to the Swede having more of a chance of hitting the ground running.

Mikel Arteta needs instant success, and having scored 97 goals over the previous two seasons, Gyokeres could certainly offer that.

That being said, Arsenal are still admirers of Sesko and understand that the Slovenian could go on to become a world-beater, but his future will not lie in N5.

What Arsenal’s analytics team thought about Benjamin Sesko

Sesko won’t join Arsenal this summer, though it does appear likely that the 22-year-old could make the move to England.

Newcastle have been linked to Sesko, as have Manchester United, as David Ornstein revealed.

Ornstein explained that Man United are now ‘prioritising’ signing Sesko, with Ruben Amorim on the prowl for a striker.

It would be fascinating to see how Sesko possibly fares at a different Premier League club, given the bold conclusion that Arsenal came to when discussing his transfer.

Speaking on the BBC Football Daily podcast, journalist Miguel Delaney revealed exactly what Arsenal’s analytics team thought of Sesko.

“I think the big talk at Arsenal was basically their analytics team really liked him.

“They thought he was comparable to Gyokeres, but that was mostly on the idea that he’s got a potentially really high ceiling. But a potentially high ceiling isn’t necessarily a definite high ceiling.”

Despite the Slovenia international having what it takes to become one of the best, there’s a risk that potential may not be fulfilled, a risk that, at this moment, Arsenal could not afford to take.

How Sesko’s scoring form compares to Viktor Gyokeres

Sesko is five years Gyokeres’ junior, so the potential is certainly there for the former Arsenal target to reach the Swede’s levels.

For now, Arsenal’s new signing is considerably ahead of Sesko based on their scoring records over the previous four seasons.

Gyokeres has scored 69 domestic goals more than Sesko since the start of the 2021/22 campaign, suggesting that Arsenal did, in fact, make the right decision.

The ex-target could go on to prove he’s worth his weight in gold if he makes the move to the Premier League, but the uncertainty is there.
