Arsenal winger Gabriel Martinelli has had a mixed campaign, as he struggled for form and fitness at times.

The 22-year-old has been excellent in recent games, with his goal and performance against Liverpool particularly standing out, but he was criticised earlier this season as he did not live up to the very high expectations he set with his outstanding performances last year.

Martinelli has missed several games through injury over the course of the campaign, and did find himself dropped for recent games against Liverpool and Crystal Palace after a few poor displays.

However, the Brazil International is now ready to kick on for the rest of the season and add to his tally of seven goals in all competitions.

Gabriel Martinelli opens up on Arsenal struggles

Speaking to Premier League media as part of their Big Interview series, the attacker explained that injuries were causing his struggles earlier in the campaign, but he now feels fully fit and back to his best.

“I think I’m getting into the groove now. I had an injury at the start of the season which hindered me a bit,” he stated.

“Now I’m back to 100%, scoring goals again, confident and the lads always help me. I believe that we’ll achieve many good things this season.”

Martinelli is the fastest player in the Arsenal squad, and his pace has proven vital in recent weeks.

David Raya’s distribution has improved, and Arsenal have created several chances through the goalkeeper playing the ball for Martinelli to run onto, with the Brazilian’s pace causing nightmares for opposition defences.

Martinelli scored 15 Premier League goals last season, and whilst he is on just five this season so far, he will hope that if he finds his best form, his numbers will shoot up between now and the end of the campaign.

Arsenal have scored 16 times in their last four games as their attack has finally clicked together well, and Martinelli could benefit well from his side’s increased fluency in attack as he aims to get on the end of more chances and provide goals in the title race.

The winger has been linked with Barcelona, but it seems highly unlikely that Arsenal will even consider the sale of such an important player for now, and once he fully returns to his best form in front of goal, Martinelli will show what he is truly capable of as a starter under Mikel Arteta.
