Arsenal will spend Christmas Day of 2024 sitting third in the Premier League table after a difficult start to 2024/25.

It’s been a season of ups and downs for Arsenal so far, as Mikel Arteta continues to combat the Gunners’ injury concerns.

Bukayo Saka is the latest Arsenal player to suffer an injury, in what has been a campaign laden with key absences.

As a result, the Gunners sit in third at Christmas time, which is a concern considering where Arteta’s side have placed in years prior.

Arsenal’s previous five Premier League positions on Christmas Day

The Gunners have had a mixed few festive periods, as fans will recall given the nightmares endured in the early moments of Arteta’s tenure.

That being said, the previous two seasons have been memorable, as Arsenal sat top of the pile in both 2023/24 and 2022/23.

Unfortunately, the Christmas Day lead did not hand the North Londoners the luck to go on and win the title, finishing second behind Manchester City on both occasions.

Still, a clear improvement has been seen, as portrayed when glancing at Arsenal’s league positions on Christmas Day in seasons prior.

2021/22 and 2019/20 provided moderate positions on Christmas Day, seeing Arsenal sit fourth and fifth respectively.

In between the two seasons was the dreaded 2020/21 campaign, where the Gunners finished eighth for the second consecutive year.

On Christmas Day of 2020, Arsenal were 15th in the table with just four wins to their name, a year memorable for the wrong reasons.

Clear concern for Mikel Arteta amid mixed start to 2024/25

While Arsenal aren’t sitting down in 15th, there’s still an issue for Arteta to consider when looking at the table this year.

Sitting a game in hand and already six points below league leaders Liverpool is not a desirable position, and neither is trailing Chelsea by two points.

Having won just 54% of their fixtures in the Premier League this season, there’s work for Arsenal to do, which must be tackled promptly if the Gunners are to remain in the title race.

Sitting third on Christmas Day in 2024 is the worst placement for Arsenal since 2021, which can be seen as both a positive regarding the standard and a negative with clear ground to make up.
