Arsenal’s worrying record against Dutch teams revealed ahead of Champions League draw

Arsenal will face either PSV Eindhoven or Feyenoord in the last 16 of the Champions League.

The Gunners eased into the top eight of the inaugural league phase of the competition, winning six of their eight matches.

Mikel Arteta’s squad is depleted in forward areas, and Bukayo Saka is unlikely to be fit for either leg of the tie against one of the two Dutch sides.

However, the North Londoners have been rewarded for their strong performances before the knockout stages, with a winnable round of 16 clash awaiting.

The draw takes place on Friday morning and will map out the route to the final at the Allianz Arena in May.

Arsenal’s record against teams from the Eredivisie

While Feyenoord or PSV are opponents that Arteta will be confident his team can overcome in relatively comfortably fashion, Arsenal’s record against Dutch teams isn’t particularly impressive.

The Gunners have never played the Rotterdam side in a competitive match, while they’ve faced PSV ten times, winning just four of these games.

In total, the Premier League outfit have played 22 matches against Eredivisie opposition, winning just nine, drawing eight and losing five.

That equates to a 41% win record, showing that Arsenal have had trouble against teams from the Netherlands.

Only matched up against PSV, Ajax, FC Twente and AZ Alkmaar previously, the prospect of a fresh opponent in Feyenoord certainly makes for more interesting viewing from a narrative perspective.

Arsenal shouldn’t fear Feyenoord or PSV

Arsenal were tentative in their last 16 tie against Porto last season, despite being a vastly superior side to the Portuguese team.

They were clearly phased by playing in a Champions League knockout game for the first time as a team, and they should’ve learnt from this.

Games against Feyenoord or PSV should see relatively run of the mill victories.

Feyenoord are set to appoint Robin van Persie as their manager, after enduring a dismal campaign thus far under Brian Priske.

They’ve struggled after losing Arne Slot and star striker Santiago Gimenez, and currently sit fourth in the Eredivise, 14 points behind league leaders Ajax.

Meanwhile, PSV are just two points off of the Amsterdam side, although Arsenal have comfortably beaten the Eindhoven team in recent years in the Champions League and the Europa League.
