Mikel Arteta thinks he has the perfect player at his disposal to succeed Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang as Arsenal captain when the Gabon star moves on in a few years time.

Arsenal’s terrible form before our win against Chelsea raised a number of questions regarding the lack of leaders at the club. Aubameyang isn’t the most vocal skipper we’ve ever had and that put some pressure on his captaincy.

Arteta stuck by his skipper and Arsenal have now won three games in a row. Aubameyang’s armband is under no threat whatsoever, but when he eventually leaves, Kieran Tierney could be the man to take over the captaincy.

“I think he can be Arsenal captain as he has the respect and admiration of every member of the staff and every player,” Arteta said about Tierney, as per Goal. “It is just the way he is. He does it in a natural way.”

“He is a really shy boy as well but he represents all of us in the club; all of the values that we want to instil and are in the DNA in this club.”

“He is shy and so humble. You see how he behaves on the pitch and when he talks he says the right thing. And he is exactly what we are looking for and I am so happy to have him in the team.”

Tierney deserves to be the next Arsenal skipper

The criticism on Aubameyang’s captaincy during our winless run was slightly unfair. Not shouting or having a go at his teammates doesn’t make him any less of a captain. He was the same guy last season and he led the team to two trophies, and Arteta was right to stand by him.

However, Auba will not stay with us forever. His time at Arsenal will eventually come to an end and Tierney is the perfect player to become our new skipper.

The Scotsman has all the traits a captain needs. He is a fantastic player as well, and the way he has been performing since the start of last month has raised the standards at our club to a whole new level.

Aubameyang should keep his armband for now, but Tierney is the right man to take over when the time comes.
