Mikel Arteta was spotted doing one thing to help inspire his Arsenal players during their extra-time battle against Porto.

Mikel Arteta tried to work the Arsenal fans up into a frenzy late on against Porto.

There was a raucous atmosphere at the Emirates Stadium all night on Tuesday, as the Gunners fought to overcome a 1-0 first-leg deficit against the Portuguese outfit in order to secure passage to the quarter final stage of the Champions League.

Thanks to a first half strike from Leandro Trossard, which was brilliantly set up by club captain Martin Odegaard, Arsenal were able to take the match to extra-time. During this period of additional action, Arteta was seen “waving his arms to the crowd asking for more noise” from the Arsenal fans, as reported by BBC Sport.

Prior to the match, Arteta called upon Arsenal fans to generate a special atmosphere in the stadium. The Spanish coach will not have been disappointed in the effort from the stands on the night.

Despite this encouragement from the stands, neither side was able to find a winner during this late stage of the game. As such, this round of 16 tie would have to be settled by a penalty shootout.

Odegaard, Kai Havertz, Bukayo Saka, and Declan Rice all kept their cool from the spot. Meanwhile, David Raya made himself the hero of the hour, as the Spanish goalkeeper saved two Porto spot-kicks in order to send Arsenal to the quarter finals of Europe’s elite club competition for the first time in 14 years.

There were wild celebrations in north London after Raya kept the visitors’ final penalty out. After 120 minutes of football, plenty of tension had been built up inside the Emirates Stadium, which was then all let out in one enormous wave of joyous relief.

Of course, Raya was the centre of attention, with even Aaron Ramsdale basking in his fellow shot-stopper’s moment of triumph.

The draw for the quarter finals will take place on Friday, when the Gunners will find out who they will face in the next round of the continental competition. They will be joined in the hat by Manchester City, Barcelona, Real Madrid, Bayern Munich, PSG, and the winners of the ties between Borussia Dortmund and PSV, and Atletico Madrid and Inter Milan.

The north London club will fancy their chances no matter who they come up against.
