Ayden Heaven spells out where Mikel Arteta went wrong before defender left Arsenal, he must learn from it

Arsenal lost a promising young defender in January when Ayden Heaven opted to join Manchester United.

The centre-back made his senior debut for the Gunners in October against Preston North End in the League Cup, but was given no further opportunities to impress in the first team by Mikel Arteta.

As a result, Heaven signed for United in the winter, after being promised a role in the first team by the Red Devils’ new manager, Ruben Amorim.

The 18-year-old went on to make six appearances for the north-west club last term, and likely would’ve made more had he not sustained a foot injury that kept him out for two months.

Ayden Heaven reveals why he left Arsenal for Manchester United

Manchester United fans have been impressed with Heaven in his limited outings thus far, adding insult to injury for the Gunners faithful.

Seeing a talented academy prospect leave would’ve been difficult for Arsenal fans, but seeing how promising he’s looked in a United shirt would’ve hurt even more.

Speaking on the United YouTube channel, Heaven revealed that he swapped North London for Manchester due to the first-team opportunities that he felt he’d receive at Old Trafford.

Asked why he made the move, Heaven responded: “The opportunities that the young players have got here in the past.

“I think United had the most minutes given to teenagers last season [2023/24]. That convinced me to come here.

“And the people and the fans here are quite loving, and I felt that when I was playing. They’re so supportive.”

Heaven was limited to just a ten-minute cameo for Arsenal, while he’s already played 290 minutes of first-team football at United.

Thus, his decision to leave N5 has certainly been justified.

Mikel Arteta needs to learn from what Ayden Heaven said

While not a direct dig at Arteta, Heaven’s comments spelt out exactly why he departed London Colney, implying that he didn’t feel there was a pathway to the first team for him at Arsenal.

Arteta must learn from this situation to ensure the Gunners don’t lose more promising talent moving forward.

Arsenal can’t afford to blood young players who aren’t necessarily quite at the level yet when they’re trying to compete for the Premier League and the Champions League, but more opportunities could be afforded to youngsters in domestic cup competitions.

The likes of Josh Nichols, Tommy Setford and Jack Porter were granted starts in the League Cup last season, but beyond that, no other Hale End starlets were entrusted to begin a game in the competition, despite Arsenal playing Championship and League One opposition in the first two rounds.

If Arteta continues to ignore youngsters in these early rounds in favour of deploying senior stars who need to be protected in these matches, then he’s likely to lose more prospects to Premier League rivals.
