Darren Bent has revealed that he’d be happy if Arsenal signed a 37-year-old striker who is expected to be available on a free transfer in the summer.

Viktor Gyokeres arrived from Sporting CP for £63 million in July, although the Swede is yet to hit the ground running in front of goal.

Meanwhile, Kai Havertz is currently struggling with an injury, and Gabriel Jesus could leave Arsenal in January.

This could mean that the Gunners will once again be in the market for a centre-forward come May, and Bent has already identified a potential option.

Darren Bent says he’d take Robert Lewandowski at Arsenal

Robert Lewandowski has enjoyed an outstanding career.

The Pole has scored 105 goals in 156 games for Barcelona over the last three years, after having netted 344 in 375 for Bayern Munich and 103 in 187 for Borussia Dortmund.

One of the most prolific strikers in world football over the last 15 years, he’s now entering the latter stages of his career and is reportedly set to be a free agent in the summer.

Despite the player turning 37 in August, former Tottenham striker and self-proclaimed Arsenal fan Darren Bent has admitted that he’d welcome Lewandowski to the Emirates with open arms.

“Just quickly, Barcelona will reportedly not renew Robert Lewandowski’s contract when it expires in the summer. Would you have him at Arsenal, Lewandowski for a year?” Bent was asked on talkSPORT.

“Lewandowski? Yeah of course I would,” he replied.

“Would you get rid of Gyokeres?” presenter Any Goldstein queried.

“No, I wouldn’t swap him for Gyokeres,” Bent said.

“I’d have him there, but no, Lewandowski, he must be 36 now surely, no, he’s 37, Lewandowski.”

Arsenal should not sign Robert Lewandowski next summer

Lewandowski can clearly still score goals at a high level.

The veteran number nine found the back of the net 42 times across all competitions for Barcelona last season, and has scored four in seven in La Liga this term.

However, he has shown clear signs that he’s slowing down of late, particularly in his all-round game.

As shown in the data above, Lewandowski is not as capable creatively as he once was, while his underlying numbers have dropped off this season.

That shows that he’s likely declining, and he’s only likely to get worse going forward. Adapting to the intensity of the Premier League at the age of 38 wouldn’t be an easy task, and he’d demand lucrative wages at Arsenal, particularly on a free.

He’s destined to play in Saudi Arabia or the United States, not in North London.
