David Raya did shocking thing that no other PL player has done this season

Arsenal goalkeeper David Raya will want to quickly forget about what transpired for him at Kenilworth Road on Tuesday evening.

David Raya was at fault for two of the goals Arsenal conceded against Luton.

Whilst he could do nothing about the hosts’ first goal, for the second he was far too meek in his efforts to claim a cross. Having made the decision to come off his line as the corner was delivered into the box, the Spaniard needed to be stronger in his attempts to catch the ball. Instead, the 28-year-old flapped at it unconvincingly, allowing Elijah Adebayo to nod the ball in from close range.

Luton’s third goal featured another error from Raya. Ross Barkley’s low drive was close to the ‘keeper, and in hindsight he should have made the save with his feet. However, he opted to dive down on the ball, didn’t get to it in time, and it squirmed under him and into the back of the net.

At that point, Arsenal found themselves 3-2 down against the promoted side. Kai Havertz quickly struck back to level things once again, before Declan Rice’s late winner ensured that Raya’s blunders did not cost the north London club any points.

Raya’s calamitous display has still got people talking, though. Plenty of Arsenal fans were highly critical of his performance after the match. WhoScored even stated that “David Raya’s performance against Luton this evening was the lowest rated by any player in a Premier League match this season (4.07),” as per their player ratings metric.

Mikel Arteta still likely to stick with David Raya as Arsenal No. 1

The fact that Raya just produced the worst performance of any player in the Premier League this season will be a huge cause for concern for Mikel Arteta, especially after the Spanish coach took the big step of making the Brentford loanee his first choice between the sticks.

Arsenal signed Raya on loan from Brentford in the recent summer transfer window, and are expected to pay £27 million to make his stay at the Emirates Stadium permanent. Soon after his arrival at the club, he overtook Aaron Ramsdale in the pecking order.

Arteta has come under fire for his treatment of Ramsdale, who is a favourite amongst the fans. The manager has previously suggested that he intends to rotate his shot-stoppers regularly, but there has been no sign of that so far. Raya is clearly his man, and it is highly unlikely that he will consider dropping him off the back of his difficult night against Luton.
