David Raya is undoubtedly one of Arsenal’s most important players, but he’s now suggested he’s got a plan away from the Emirates later in his career.
David Raya is happy at Arsenal – why wouldn’t he be? He’s now considered one of the best goalkeepers in the world.
The goalkeeper has become a key figure under Mikel Arteta, playing an important role in how Arsenal build from the back and control games. His performances have helped the team compete at the top level, and he looks fully settled in North London.
However, his latest comments suggest he is already pretty clear on what he wants next.
TRUE or FALSE: David Raya is the best goalkeeper in the world…
David Raya wants to play in La Liga
The goalkeeper was taking part in a Q and A session on The Residency App, and he was asked about potentially going to play in Spain.
Raya has had a strange career in that, at the age of 30, he has only ever played in England, despite being a Spain international.
The Barcelona-born stopper has now made it clear he would, one day, like to go back to play in La Liga.
“I would like to play in La Liga one day, yes, but at the moment I am very happy here at Arsenal,’ Raya said.
It is an honest answer rather than a controversial one.
Many players have ambitions to experience different leagues, and for Spanish players, La Liga often remains a long-term goal. Raya is no different. The key detail is not the ambition itself, but the timing.
Right now, there is no indication he is looking to leave.
By stressing that he is “very happy” at Arsenal, Raya makes it clear his focus is on the present. That should reassure supporters, especially given how important he has become to the team’s system. Arteta relies heavily on his goalkeeper’s ability with the ball, and Raya fits that role perfectly.
At the same time, the comment does plant a seed.
Arsenal will eventually have to think about the future, as all clubs do with key players. Raya is in his prime years, and if he continues to perform at a high level, interest from Spain could grow. Clubs in La Liga will always monitor players with his profile.
Thibaut Courtois and Jan Oblak aren’t getting any younger as the number ones at both Real Madrid and Atletico Madrid, and while Barcelona seem set with Joan Garcia, there can always be a twist at Camp Nou too.
Don’t be shocked if Raya does end up playing for a Spanish giant at some point.
