Iconic former Arsenal goalkeeper David Seaman has admitted that he is surprised by the Gunners’ impressive start to the season.
Arsenal currently sit third in the Premier League table, just one point behind leaders Manchester City and only trailing Liverpool on goal difference, with twelve matches now played.
The north London club have only lost one league match so far, and have picked up impressive wins against Manchester United and Manchester City.
For the first time in many years, Arsenal went into this season as genuine title contenders, having come close to clinching the crown last time out. Mikel Arteta was also backed to spend heavily in the summer to help the club build on their recent progress.
However, despite having racked up an impressive points tally, Arsenal have struggled for fluency on the pitch so far this season. Going forward, Arteta’s side are less devastating in the final third than they were last season.
The loss of Granit Xhaka has certainly had an impact, as Kai Havertz has struggled to make an impression since his arrival at the Emirates Stadium. What’s more, injuries have seen the likes of Gabriel Jesus, Gabriel Martinelli, Martin Odegaard, and Bukayo Saka, amongst others, miss matches – all players who are key to how Arsenal construct their attacks.

Arsenal looking to build on solid foundations
David Seaman has noticed that the Gunners’ performance levels have not been outstanding at times in recent weeks. Speaking on the Seaman Says podcast, the ex-shot-stopper said, “Arsenal are surprising me if I’m honest because we’re not playing as well as we did last season, but we’re getting the results.”
It is a huge credit to Arteta and his players that they have found a way to grind out positive results despite not playing at their best. This has been made possible by a rock solid defensive effort. Arsenal have only conceded ten times so far in the Premier League this season, no other side has let in fewer.
Arteta will be hoping that Arsenal can grow into the season, and improve as the campaign goes on, hitting peak form at the vital time.
