Dean Saunders says Arsenal should go and sign £64m player who Liverpool just got rid of

Arsenal travel to Anfield to take on Liverpool this weekend, and Dean Saunders believes Arsenal should sign one of the Merseysiders’ former players.

The Gunners have spent over £250 million on their squad this summer, signing seven players.

Piero Hincapie is expected to join on loan from Bayer Leverkusen before the transfer window slams shut on Monday, and thus, there is unlikely to be room for any further additions.

However, it could be argued that the North Londoners could still do with one final piece of offensive firepower, and Dean Saunders has made a suggestion to Mikel Arteta as to who this could be.

Dean Saunders says Arsenal should sign Darwin Nunez

Viktor Gyokeres signed for £63 million from Sporting CP this summer, joining Arteta’s ranks to compete with Kai Havertz for a starting place up front.

The Gunners now have two adept strikers in their squad, and this should arguably be sufficient to compete for the title once again, assuming Havertz is able to stay fit.

Gabriel Jesus is currently recovering from an injury, and will also be in the mix for minutes as Arsenal’s centre-forward once he returns later this year.

However, the addition of Gyokeres hasn’t stopped former Liverpool striker Dean Saunders from suggesting that the Gunners should make a move for Darwin Nunez.

“If I was Arsenal, I wouldn’t hesitate to sign Núñez,” Saunders said on the Aldo Meets podcast.

“They’re all a gamble. At least you know he works his socks off. You know what you’re going to get from him. He tries, and even if he doesn’t score, he has a goal in him.

“He’s not like a passenger. He’s also got, obviously, the experience of playing in the Premier League, which is the hardest one to play in.”

The boat has passed for Arsenal to sign Darwin Nunez

Whilst not a polished finisher, Nunez was a threat for Liverpool in the Premier League.

His pace and movement in behind caused teams issues, while his pressing was essential to the way Liverpool played under Jurgen Klopp.

However, the Merseyside club sold him to Saudi Arabia for a reason this summer, accepting a £56 million fee after having spent £64 million on him just three years ago.

The Uruguayan hasn’t developed composure or maturity in front of goal, often producing rash moments with his final action.

As excellent as his all-around game is, if he’s never going to be able to produce reliably in the most important aspect of the game, then he’s not worth investing time or money in.
