Edu Gaspar has officially resigned from his role as the sporting director of Arsenal.

The Brazilian had been at the helm at the Emirates for over five years. He initially joined as the technical director in 2019 and was then promoted to become the club’s sporting director three years later.

Arsenal fans were shocked that Edu decided to leave the club in the middle of the season, and there have been many theories about the reason behind his decision.

One interesting reason has now emerged.

Why Edu Gaspar has left Arsenal

From the outside, it is hard to understand why Edu would’ve wanted to leave Arsenal.

The Brazilian is in a great position at one of the most prestigious football clubs in the world. He has done a great job and is widely respected within the Emirates.

That is the reason why everyone was surprised when news emerged that Edu has decided to leave Arsenal, but one reason behind his decision has now emerged.

GiveMeSport claim that Edu actually wanted a more ‘expansive role’ than the one he had as the sporting director at Arsenal.

The report adds that the 46-year-old really wanted to have the ‘ability to sign and develop young Brazilian talent’ whenever he wanted to. He could not do that at Arsenal.

The Gunners were nowhere in the conversation to sign wonderkids in Brazil like Endrick and Estevao Willian, who are among the most talented youngsters in the country at the moment.

It has been revealed that ‘young South American or Brazilian talents prefer to move to’ multi-club groups because ‘it offers more security and, ultimately, minutes’.

Arsenal don’t have that luxury, but the role Evangelos Marinakis is offering Edu will allow him to sign and develop Brazilian talents at multiple clubs.

That is the reason why Edu decided to leave Arsenal.

Edu set for a bumper pay rise

Money is always an important factor in any job in the world.

Edu’s love and passion for football is unquestionable, and he showed that every single day while he was at Arsenal over the last five years.

The Independent now claim that Edu’s wages are set to be more than tripled if he accepts Marinakis’ offer to join his group and take charge of Nottingham Forest, Olympiacos and Rio Ave.

A massive increase in salary combined with a role that allows him to do what he wants – sign and develop young Brazilian talent – was always going to be a tempting offer.

We’re not surprised that Edu is set to accept it and we wish him the best.
