Club legend Emmanuel Petit thinks Mikel Arteta has an expiry date as Arsenal manager.
Arteta has been at Arsenal for almost six years, winning the FA Cup in 2020.
Aside from lifting the FA Cup over five years ago, the Spaniard hasn’t touched a major trophy, missing out on the Premier League title for three consecutive seasons.
Though Arsenal’s growth since Arteta’s first starting XI has been staggering, there’s now a feeling that there’s no excuse for the boss not to take the next step.

Emmanuel Petit thinks Mikel Arteta could be sacked by Arsenal next summer
Questions are continually being asked of Arteta, with many wondering whether the Arsenal manager has what it takes to deliver accolades such as the Premier League and the Champions League.
Even though Arsenal only announced themselves as genuine title contenders in the 2022/23 season, Emmanuel Petit thinks time is ticking for Arteta already.
Speaking before Arsenal’s draw with Manchester City, the Frenchman told Stadium Astro that he believes this is Arteta’s final year to prove himself.
When asked how long Arsenal could give Arteta to deliver a major trophy, Petit said the following.
“His last season, yes. For me, yeah. Come on, guys, we have to be honest, I like Mikel and the work he’s doing so far, but at the end of the day, you can splash money, we’re Arsenal. I’m tired of it. I don’t know about you, but I’m tired of it.”
The rest of the panel was taken aback by Petit’s opinion, which prompted the Arsenal legend to double down on how ‘tired’ he is of Arteta not leading the Gunners to major silverware.
“He [Arteta] brings you victory but not success, which means it doesn’t give you the guarantee that they’ll win the title,” Petit said.
“There are so many clubs in the Premier League that have huge money and have spent a lot of money, but as I said, for me, this season, he’s got what he needs. On the bench and on the pitch to make the rotation, so now, they have to compete for the title.
“I’m tired of it, honestly. When you play for Arsenal, you have to compete for the title. I have huge respect for the FA Cup, but come on, I’m tired of seeing Manchester City and Liverpool winning the title; now it’s our turn.”
Arteta under fire early in the season
In Petit’s opinion, the FA Cup or Carabao Cup wouldn’t be enough for Arteta to keep his job at Arsenal beyond the summer, which is harsh.
In fact, it’s incredibly harsh, but as the club icon also stated, it is how high the standards must be at Arsenal Football Club.
| Matches | Wins | Draws | Losses | Goals for | Goals against | Win % |

Arteta has been heavily criticised so early into this season, as, for the most part, Arsenal haven’t looked convincing, particularly when going forward.
From being accused of playing it safe with conservative line-ups to placing more emphasis on defensive work, both the media and a selection of fans are growing tired of Arteta’s stance.
Petit’s view is more on the extreme side, but the fact remains that Arteta really does need to get closer to delivering the title to North London, particularly with the squad he now has.
