Ethan Nwaneri was the star of the show for Arsenal in their 3-0 win over Preston North End in the EFL Cup.

The Gunners travelled to Deepdale to face Paul Heckingbottom’s side on Wednesday night, and Mikel Arteta’s men were the clear favourites to win the game.

Arsenal started brilliantly and dominated the game from the first whistle. Gabriel Jesus opened the scoring in the 24th minute, but Nwaneri’s stunner nine minutes later was the goal of the game.

Kai Havertz made it three in the second half, but Nwaneri is the name on everyone’s mind after his incredible performance against Preston.

Thierry Henry is Arsenal’s greatest-ever footballer.

The legendary Frenchman was absolutely unbelievable for the Gunners when he played for them. He is their record goalscorer and it will be very difficult for anyone to take that feat away from him.

Nwaneri is an attacking midfielder by trade, but the 17-year-old has now done something that even Henry – who was a prolific striker – couldn’t do.

Despite playing in England for over eight years, Henry was only handed three appearances in the EFL Cup by Arsene Wenger.

The World Cup winner played twice in the 1999/00 season and one more time in 2005/06. He managed to score two goals in those three games.

Nwaneri has played just two times in the EFL Cup but he has already overtaken Henry’s goal tally in the competition – he has scored thrice.

That is a phenomenal achievement, one that he should be really proud of. However, there is so much more to come from the 17-year-old – he is a superstar in the making.

Mikel Arteta has to make one big decision about Nwaneri now

Arsenal fans have been annoyed with Arteta for not giving more opportunities to Nwaneri in the Premier League and the Champions League.

The teenager has impressed everyone with his performances in the EFL Cup, and his cameos in the two bigger competitions have been really good as well.

Arteta, for one reason or another, has been reluctant to throw Nwaneri into a big league game from the start, but we think that should change on Saturday.

Arsenal take on Newcastle United in what will surely be a difficult away game. However, we think Nwaneri has done enough to deserve an opportunity to start at St James’ Park.

Whether Arteta will agree with us, however, remains to be seen.
