Arsenal have endured a season of turmoil both on and off the pitch with came to a head with their 1-0 defeat at the hands of West Ham.

The defeat leaves Arsenal eleven points adrift of Premier League leaders Liverpool and despite Mikel Arteta vowing ‘it is possible’ to still win the league, the Gunners season is in danger of petering out.

Bukayo Saka and Gabriel Martinelli are progressing well in their recovery from injury and Arteta will be keen for the return of the attacking duo in order to keep any momentum in the season alive.

Paul Merson slammed Arteta for his Merino decision in playing the Spaniard centre forward but it is another Arsenal player who has faced the wrath of one ex-Spurs forward’s criticism.

Darren Bent slams the form of Arsenal captain Martin Odegaard

Speaking on talkSport, former Tottenham Hotspur striker Darren Bent has given his verdict of Arsenal’s shortfalls in the title race and has picked out the form of captain Martin Odegaard.

Bent stated: “”Appalling, he hasn’t been good since he came back from injury. He had a little flirt with okay here we go but in total five assists hasn’t been good enough. He’s been poor.”

Odegaard has struggled for form in front of goal and the pundit believes that is down to his choices being made in the final third.

Bent explained: “Like don’t get me wrong he’s a wonderful footballer, too much flicking and all this like trying little scoopy passes that are not on, just shoot.”

Arsenal fans are beginning to turn on Odegaard

Arsenal fans were furious with Odegaard against West Ham after it appeared the captain was shying away from a clear goal scoring opportunity by running away from the ball during a counter attack.

The Norwegian has scored just three goals in all competitions this season, a far cry from his previous two seasons where he excelled in Arsenal title challenges.

It seems Gunners supporters are now doubting whether Odegaard has the capability and mentality to lead the side to success this season with their only real chance now coming in the Champions League.

Ben White’s return may help Odegaard to find his usual level of prowess in front of goal but Arteta will need his skipper to shape up quickly if they are to keep any flicker of hope for this season burning.
