As Arsenal dropped points against Everton, a former player became a record-breaker in the Premier League.

The 2024/25 campaign was all but concluded for the Gunners after Arsenal’s 1-1 draw with Everton at Goodison Park.

Leandro Trossard’s first-half strike wasn’t enough to win the game, as Myles Lewis-Skelly conceded a controversial penalty, which Iliman Ndiaye converted.

Though matchday 31 was one of upset for Mikel Arteta, it was a week to savour for one former Arsenal player.

Danny Welbeck makes Premier League history at Brighton

After Arsenal’s draw at Goodison, three eventful matches kicked off simultaneously, one of which involved drama for two former Gunners.

In Crystal Palace’s meeting with Brighton at Selhurst Park, Eddie Nketiah was sent off and Danny Welbeck was a hero.

Welbeck, who left Arsenal in 2019, became a record-breaker, taking the crown from Pascal Gross to become Brighton’s all-time highest scoring player in the Premier League.

The former England international netted his 31st goal in Brighton colours to overtake Gross’ record of 30 in the Premier League, writing his name into the Seagull’s history books.

It’s heartwarming to see the striker scoring freely at 34, truly finding a place to call home after a difficult end to his career at the Emirates saw him join Watford.

Welbeck was surrounded by talent at Arsenal; however, he was equally as surrounded by injuries, leaving North London on the back of a campaign derailed by a serious ankle problem.

Arsene Wenger was an admirer of Welbeck

After terminating his contract at Watford, very few would’ve anticipated that five years later, Welbeck would be a Premier League record-breaker.

The former Manchester United forward has had his fair share of struggles with injury and form during his time in the English top flight, but one figure never lost faith in the player.

Arsene Wenger described Welbeck as ‘exceptional’ in 2018, lauding the striker’s ability to bounce back from a series of serious injuries.

“He had every reason to feel sorry for himself and think this mountain is too big to climb. He had the right knee, the left knee, a year out both times, but he worked hard, which is unnoticed by everybody.

“People were questioning if he’d come back or not, that is the most difficult test for any sportsperson. I believe what he has done is exceptional.”

Leaving Arsenal as a wounded forward in 2019 to become a Premier League history-maker for Brighton, Welbeck has certainly exceeded expectations on the South Coast, to the joy of many.
