William Saliba has quickly established himself as one of Arsenal’s most important players since he joined the squad last season.

Arsenal were on their way to an unexpected Premier League title, but saw their form collapse when Saliba picked up a season-ending injury, and Rob Holding could not replicate his influence in the back line.

The 22-year-old is already one of the best defenders in the Premier League, with his composure and ability on the ball coupled with incredible physical strength.

Holding, who left in the summer after failing to provide inadequate cover for Saliba, has now made a surprise revelation about the centre-back’s training methods.

Rob Holding reveals surprise about William Saliba

Speaking on Harry’s Gym Chat on YouTube, Holding revealed that Saliba hardly trains his upper body, but despite this, his speed and strength is still remarkable.

“You’ve got someone like Saliba who’s a unit, but you never see him in the gym benching, you never see him. I’ve seen him do pull-ups and it’s not the best technique and there’s not many of them!” Holding revealed.

“But then you try and get the ball off him, no chance! You try to run past him, he’ll just go: ‘Nah, you stay there, I’m going to get the ball’. And he’s rapid as well, he’s fast.”

Saliba and Gabriel Magalhaes have formed an outstanding defensive partnership at the back for Arsenal, and they are arguably the perfect pairing in terms of skillset.

Gabriel likes to play on the front foot as an aggressive defender who is powerful in the air. When alongside Saliba, the Frenchman compliments this with his calmness and composure way beyond his years.

There are never any nerves in the Emirates Stadium crowd whenever Saliba is being pressured on the ball, as he can play through it with ease, and in 1v1 situations, there are few better defenders around when it comes to preventing shots.

The ability of Saliba and Gabriel at the back has seen Arsenal create arguably the best defence in the Premier League, and if Mikel Arteta’s side are to claw their way back into the title race, it will be in no small part down to these two.

Arsenal hardly concede chances from set-pieces, despite a dip in form in recent weeks, and most of the goals conceded this season have come from individual errors elsewhere on the pitch, as teams often cannot find another way past the two defenders.
