Viktor Gyokeres netted a double against Sunderland to keep up his fine run of form and teammate Gabriel Martinelli now has an ask of his teammate.

Gyokeres’ goals in the second half helped put things to bed for the Gunners after Martin Zubimendi had given them the lead.

For Gyokeres, it’s now five in his last four in all competitions.

Still, Arsenal would obviously prefer all their forwards to get in on the goal scoring act.

And after Martinelli effectively robbed a goal from Gyokeres in Europe, the Brazilian winger has admitted it’s been mentioned at the training ground.

What Gabriel Martinelli now wants from Viktor Gyokeres

In an ideal world, Arsenal will get both Gyokeres and Martinelli firing on all cylinders in the coming weeks.

For now, though, having Gyokeres among the goals is enough, even if it generates a bit of healthy competition in the squad.

Speaking after the game, Martinelli got onto the subject of Gyokeres and his recent goal scoring form.

However, he admitted that after laying a few on for his teammate, he’s expecting something in return at some point.

“I told him the other day that I didn’t mean to steal his goal! [against Kairat]. But I think I gave him two goals already, against Leeds and today, so he needs to give me one more,” Martinelli quipped.

The stats show Martinelli and Gyokeres need to work together more

Quite remarkably, that was Martinelli’s first direct assist for Gyokeres today.

While Martinelli speaks of wanting something in return from the Swedish forward, it goes without saying that both players have work to do in terms of their combination.

Over time, this might improve and both players will no doubt assist each other plenty of times down the road.

Ultimately, football is about combinations and partnerships and Martinelli and Gyokeres are showing signs that there’s something there to work with.
